Lately I’ve seen a lot more people of all different races and backgrounds posting on social media about social justice issues- mainly with a racial impetus. I’ve seen videos on Facebook displaying police brutality caught on camera, pictures on Instagram showing protesters holding signs pleading for change and equality, posts from people who (sometimes) unexpectedly post such liberal perspectives and others posting very conservative views. Yes that may sound critical but by the same token I am open to hearing, seeing, and trying to gain a deeper understanding of other perspectives whether I agree or not.
Anyway, I am pleasantly surprised with what I have been seeing. Silence is not the answer. Violence is not the answer. Together, as a united front, we can make a change. Feel free to protest in the way you feel is impactful, but we must protest these inequities in our society and fight for our rights. Where is our democracy and freedom? We need to speak up. Do not let those in power let us lose our voices. There is power in numbers. What more can we do to bring change? We must have a movement, a revolution of sorts, who is our MLK of today?
This is America- but it seems the “leaders” of our country have forgotten what that means and choose to instead abuse their power. Please do not forget that most of our elected officials are just that- ELECTED. We chose these people to run our society. We put our trust in them to do the right thing. When they are not meeting our needs, we must make a change. We have the right to vote (which seems to be in question for some) so vote and let your voice be heard. One cannot be so against a society but not do their part to change it the way they wish it would be. We all know Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity, doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results- we cannot do that anymore.
How can we do our part to unite the masses? How do we bring consciousness to those whose minds are still sedated by the views of the media? It is having a somatic effect on our society (think Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World). I implore you to think for yourselves! Have an opinion. Have a voice. Let’s not lose anymore lives to racism, classism, senseless violence, or an unjust system! Peace is what we need.
Unite. Advocate. Change. The time is now.
